Hozier in an Irish singer born in 1990. He grew up surrounded by blues, and we can still hear this influence in his music. The EP Take me to Church and the famous single called the same, made him famous all around the world, topped charts in 12 countries and was nominated for Song of the Year at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards.
In Take me to Church, the lyrics talks about his love for a woman and religion. Hozier is really critical of the Catholic Church’s hypocrisy. Indeed, the song is just about being human, and how the Church condamn us for being just that.
“I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife." He clearly denounces the fact that Church tends to attack and discriminate people who don’t do as religious doctrines say. The message is clear : Church doesn’t make the rules and if you want to love, to have sex or whatever you want you should feel free to do it because that’s all of those things that make us humans.
Besides, the video clip tells us more about Hozier’s intentions : denouncing the homophobia within the Church. Indeed, the video clip features to gay men being hunted by a group of men. This song denounces homophobia and is a beautiful call for tolerance regardless your sexuality. After hearing this song it can be interesting to ask yourself this question : What actions can we take to stop homophobia within the Catholic Church and reunite people around the true Christian values that are peace, justice, love and compassion.
