Song of the week : Father and Son

Born in 1948 Yusuf/Cat Stevens is a British singer and songwriter of the late 60’s and 70’s. With his earthy voice, introspective lyrics and spiritual themes he is one of the most famous folk-rock singer of that era. Cat Stevens also devoted a major part of his life to humanitarian aid, charitable causes, and educational efforts . He released many songs that became famous you probably heard of like « wild world » or « father and son » that I highly recommend .

In Father and Son, Yusuf/Cat Stevens deals with the relationship between a father and his young son. The English singer shows the complexity of such a relationship and how it could be tough to understand each other. Thus, in this song the father tries to give some advice to his son but the latter just wants to live his own life and not become like his father.

“You're still young, that's your fault, There's so much you have to know.” With these lyrics the father explains life to his young boy whereas he answers : “How can I try to explain, when I do he turns away again.” Therefore we can easily picture out the lack of communication between two persons which will lead one of them to leave the others as we can hear it in the last verse of the son : “Now there’s a way, and I know, that I have to go away”.

This song is a really beautiful song which encourages to have a better relationship with your father or son so, it maybe not time to make a change but it’s the one to tell your family you love them.

If you’ve loved this song, we recommend you the group “Simon and Garfunkel” which also plays the same genre of music.
